The Rules for Buying Fragrances

lucky-number-6

I know, I know, more rules.  Trust me when I say that I cannot recommend anything to you without first telling you what to do and then how to buy it.

Rule #1:  Fragrances say Eau de Toilette (or Cologne, or Parfum) for a reason.  99% of men’s fragrances are Eau de Toilette meaning that that bottle has a lower concentration of perfume oil alcohol than an Eau de Parfum.  That’s usually really good since perfume oil typically smells good on women.  The associate at the counter wants anything that’s pricier (Eau de Parfum) to sound fancier so you’ll buy something more expensive..don’t fall for it.

Rule #2:  Fragrance “layering” is a stupid idea.  So many lines of fragrance come with shower gels, deodorants, and other items that are cute but won’t make you smell any better.  All this ancillary stuff will just overwhelm people and make an invisible force field of smell around you.  Moreover, it’s expensive!

Rule #3:  Buy the bigger bottle.  The savings on a larger bottle of fragrance is usually 50%.  You get a lot more for your money.  Why do you buy the bigger bottle if money is no object?……………….

Rule #4:  Only spray yourself 2-3 times per day.  Covering yourself in fragrance will only make you smell obnoxious.  If you’ve followed all the rules and you are wearing something that smells good on you it isn’t going to take much to make them scent pleasant and lasting.
