Pilates for Posture

There are plenty or exercise routines you can do while in the office, in a meeting or in front of the television. Sitting all day long is not what the spinal cord was designed for. You need to do some stretching and generate some muscle movement to help your body cope with the strain of sitting down all day.

Don’t do marathon sitting sessions. Take a break every now and them to rest your eyes. If you have a carpeted floor, it might be a good idea to lie down on the floor flat on your back just to get the spinal cord back into its natural shape. While sitting down or lying on the floor, you can do some stretching exercises to induce circulation in your arms, legs, back and neck. You don’t need to do the sweaty stuff. Remember, you are still in the office and need to keep a modicum of good grooming.

The worst part about sitting down all day is that we tend to hunch whenever we read something or look at the computer monitor. We also tend to slouch forward. This pushes the spinal cord in a curved position that is directly opposite to the way the spinal cord should be curved. This is what causes a lot of lower back pain problems in many people. A few yoga or pilates exercise routines should get you back into shape. Pilates itself is an exercise designed to specifically realign the spinal cord without having to sweat it out. If you don’t have a carpet, you can get an exercise mat for only twenty or so dollars to use as a cushion against the floor and to help you avoid getting dirt on you and your clothes. The bonus of pilates exercises is that they tone your abdominals. You don’t need to look for other routines to do. With pilates, you hit two birds with one stone. Yoga is another great way to get rid of back pain and re-acquire proper spinal cord alignment. Yoga, after all, is where Joseph Pilates got his ideas for forming the pilates disciplines.

Pregnant? This is not a problem. Pilates and yoga exercises are sometimes recommended to expecting mothers because they make natural deliveries easier. Pilates and yoga are also great exercises for post-pregnancy recovery. As the fetus gets bigger and heavier, the strain and distortion to the spinal cord intensifies. Ultimately, a mother who just gave birth is confronted with a misaligned spinal cord and distended abdomen. Pilates and yoga are considered as miracle remedies for this. You need to consult your doctor, though, before you go ahead with the exercises.

All in all, whether you are using pilates, yoga or conventional exercise forms, stretching the body after being in the same position for a long period of time is a good way to up your energy levels and stimulate circulation. A little exercise also releases chemicals within the body that changes your mood to the positive. If you need to get your creative juices flowing for an all-important presentation, exercise.
